Diet Myth Busters & Recipe

Let’s bust a couple of “diet” myths today, shall we? So many people come to me and tell me they have cut one thing or another from their diet. They tell me they no longer eat their favorite breads or keep their fat intake very low every day. Honestly this sounds miserable to me! What kind of life can you live without tortilla chips and guacamole?! No more bread and cheese?! I mean, what about pizza?!

The good news is,

Carbs are not bad for you. 😮

Fats are not bad for you. 😯

I swear. I eat them both, ALL THE TIME. Here’s a little insight on why those myths are, well, a big ole pile of stinky myth-poo 💩 .

It’s true that:

Cookies = carbs

Chips = carbs

Sugar = carbs

But it’s also true that:

Vegetables = carbs

Pasta = carbs

Fruit = carbs

Beans = carbs

Not all carbs are created equal. Meaning, not all carbs are bad for you. Carbs are not the enemy when it comes to weight loss. The ONLY thing that will make you gain true weight is a surplus of calories. Don’t cut carbs just because you want to lose weight; your body and brain NEED those carbs to function correctly. Instead, choose your carbs wisely. Stay away from processed foods with added sugars, and make sure you’re in a daily calorie deficit of no more than 500 calories each day.

Now, let’s look at fat:

Fat in 🙅🏼‍♀️equal fat gained.

Fat is not your enemy when it comes to weight loss. Just because you eat fat in your diet does not mean you will store that fat on your body. In fact, your body and brain NEED fat to function correctly. Instead of cutting fat from your diet, choose your fats wisely; aim for mostly mono saturated fats, some saturated fats, and plenty of omega 3 fatty acids, avoid trans fat and chemically created fat substitutes (hello margarine/ I can’t believe it’s not butter, sorry Fabio! ). The ONLY thing that will cause you to store fat is a surplus of calories. It does not matter where those calories come from, your body can convert and store any macro as fat.

Now that we’ve decided that carbs and fats are in fact, not bad for us 🎉🎉🎉, here’s my favorite recipe for a healthy carb, roasted in a healthy fat. Try it out and enjoy them, knowing you are fueling your body with a nutritious option! 💪

Roasted Sweet Potato Fries:

Ingredients:

Desired amount of whole sweet potatoes, washed.

Desired dry spices or fresh herbs

1tsp- 1Tbs Healthy oil of your choice (olive, avocado, coconut)

Method:

Preheat oven to 450°F

Cut the sweet potato lengthwise so that you can lay it flat on the cutting board. Cut into strips that are about 1/4" thick. Lay that piece down on its side and cut in half again (if it's a really thick sweet potato). The goal is to have 1/4" thick batons (fries) or wedges.

Put the fries in a a bowl and spray with Extra Virgin Olive Oil cooking spray. Or you can add 1tsp- 1-TBS of regular EVOO. I used the spray because they really don't need a lot of oil! They should look lightly covered with oil, not drenched.

Add whatever seasonings you want! I like to use Italian seasoning and some garlic powder. I've also done them with chipotle chili powder and smoked paprika. You could even use old bay! Add salt and pepper. But be careful with extra salt if you used a spice blend that already has salt in it. Mrs. Dash brand has a lot of fun seasoning blends that don't have salt added (check the label for added sugar on some of them though).

Put the fries on a baking sheet lined with AL Foil. Bake at 450°F until they are the desired consistency. You can check their smoosh level by pricking with a fork. Mine took about 25-30 mins. I'd check on them at 12mins and continue cooking in 5-10min increments until they are the consistency you want.

Put on a plate and enjoy! 😋
